This article doesn’t pretend to give a new modern scientific interpretation for the classical view. It tries to shed light on how a word which comes from Arabic may have various meanings when it is understood with modern science knowledge.

Surah Al-Waqi'ah begins the seventy-fifth verse with an oath and translations generally flatten it into the language of position: the stars' locations or positions. It appears to be setting the scene—a gesture toward the night sky before the argument continues. The Arabic word used in the oath derives from a root centered around the idea of falling, rather than from a root whose basic meaning is simply location or position.

This single fact is worth considering because modern astronomy describes orbiting bodies in those terms. A star does not stay in one place. It falls constantly along a path through spacetime. The article investigates the actual meanings of the word mawāqiʿ, in Arabic, how the parallelization between them with the contemporary physics surprisingly tightly and-what's even more importantly-where it stops.

فَلَآ أُقْسِمُ بِمَوَٰقِعِ ٱلنُّجُومِ ٧٥
وَإِنَّهُۥ لَقَسَمٌۭ لَّوْ تَعْلَمُونَ عَظِيمٌ ٧٦

Fa-lā uqsimu bi-mawāqiʿi n-nujūm • wa-innahu la-qasamun law taʿlamūna ʿaẓīm — "So I swear by the mawāqiʿ of the stars; and indeed, it is a mighty oath, if only you knew." (56:75–76)

The root beneath the translation

Mawāqiʿ is actually plural of mawqiʿ, which is derived noun and its meaning comes from root و-ق-ع (w-q-ʿ). Unlike a general word for location such as makān, it carries the underlying idea of falling, occurring, or coming to pass. The same root gives the chapter its name: Al-Wāqiʿah, the Event, the Thing That Befalls.

Morphologically, mawqiʿ follows the pattern of a noun of place and it means something closer to the place where something falls or the point at which something occurs. The verbal sense remains embedded in the noun; the oath is not simply referring to fixed locations in the sky, but to places defined by the action contained in the root.

Arabic had other choices. Makān (place), mawḍiʿ (spot, location), manzil (station or way-stop; used elsewhere in the Qur'an precisely for the lunar mansions), maghrib (place of setting). A passage aiming for "the positions of the stars" as poetic background had at least half a dozen simple words to choose from. The word chosen preserves the imagery of falling within its root structure, rather than using a term whose meaning is purely spatial.

Orbits are free-fall, not suspension

The physics side of this is not an idea; it is the first thing a mechanics class corrects.

  • The Moon is falling toward Earth. It has been falling for four and a half billion years. Its tangential velocity is large enough that the surface curves away beneath it at the same rate it descends, so the fall never ends.
  • Earth is falling toward the Sun, along a trajectory, for the same reason.
  • The Sun is falling toward the galactic centre, completing one orbit roughly every 230 million years.
  • Our galaxy is moving through a larger gravitational landscape, toward the Virgo cluster, in a state of gravitational free fall.

Nothing in the visible universe is stationary and nothing is held up. In Newtonian terms, orbit is a projected path that never misses the ground.n General Relativity things get still clearer: A body in free fall, while pulled by gravity is actually moving along the “straightest” path possible through a spacetime warped by gravity and not feeling any force that pulls them inward towards a source of gravity. This path is called a geodesic. The "falling" is not a metaphor imposed on the motion. It is the motion.

So a word describing the points where falling occurs, applied to stars, is not a clumsy fit that has to be argued into shape. It is more literally accurate than positions.

A noun of time and of place

There is a second layer, and it is grammatical rather than lexical.

The morphological pattern that produces mawqiʿ is not exclusive to place. In Arabic it is classified as ism zamān wa ism makān — a noun of time and a noun of place. The identical form serves both: depending on context, mawqiʿ denotes where the falling happens or when it happens. The pattern does not force a choice between the two.

That is a peculiar thing to hold in one word, and it is exactly the peculiarity relativity insists on. An event in physics is not a location. It is four coordinates — three spatial, one temporal — because a "where" without a "when" does not pick out anything. Asking where a star is, full stop, is a malformed question.

It becomes more pointed with light-travel time. Every stellar position ever observed is a historical record. Betelgeuse is seen as it stood some six centuries ago; the Andromeda galaxy as it stood two and a half million years ago. The night sky is not a snapshot of a present moment — it is a composite of thousands of different moments, each one the when attached to a where. An oath sworn on the mawāqiʿ of the stars is sworn on something that cannot be reduced to spatial coordinates without losing its content.

How far the parallel actually goes

Intellectual honesty requires stating the limits, and there are three worth naming.

The classical readings are not this one

The commentary tradition read 56:75 several ways. Many exegetes took mawāqiʿ al-nujūm as the setting-places of stars on the horizon. A well-attested reading transmitted from Ibn ʿAbbās takes nujūm in its other established sense — instalments — and reads the verse as an oath by the portions in which the Qur'an itself was sent down, which fits the verses that follow. Neither reading is astrophysical, and neither is a mistake. A word that supports the reading offered here alongside those is doing several things at once; that is a claim about semantic depth, not about hidden data.

The grammar of the oath is itself debated

Some people who study grammar think that Fa-lā uqsimu means I do not swear. But others see it as emphatic affirmation. In this reading, functions as an emphatic particle rather than as a simple negation. The majority favour the emphatic sense. But the construction is contested, and a reading built on the verse should acknowledge that its opening particle is not settled.

This is not a formula

The verse contains no orbital period, no inverse-square law, no numbers. Treating scripture as an encrypted physics text is a genre with a poor record — it tends to work backwards from a known result and select whichever translation cooperates. The honest claim here is narrower and, arguably, more interesting: a word was chosen whose root sense and grammatical pattern both align with how celestial motion is now understood, in a text produced fourteen centuries before geodesics were formulated. Language is not random. Seventh-century Arabic had the other words and did not use them.

Whether that is remarkable design or remarkable coincidence is not a question physics can settle, and pretending otherwise helps no one. What can be said is that the alignment is real, that it survives inspection rather than dissolving under it, and that the flat English translation of positions conceals it entirely.

Conclusion

The value of a verse like this is not that it proves something. It is that it rewards attention — and the reward only arrives for readers willing to go past the translation into the morphology, and past the postcard image of a fixed night sky into the mechanics of what those points of light are actually doing.

Theology and science punish the same mistake: Reading scripture only in translation is much like looking at the sky and seeing only a ceiling. In each case, the surface appears flat, static, and complete—hiding motion and deeper structure beneath it.

The stars in 56:75 are not merely placed. They are falling, each through its own point in space and its own moment in time, and the Arabic preserves that sense within a single word. That is worth a second look from anyone who cares about either the text or the sky — and worth learning enough about the other field to recognize the connection.
